Gettin’ Giggy with It

Mashable! writes a review of a cool new site by the name of GiggedUp adds a twist to the job market. Surprise!…it adds video.
Given that 2006 seems to be the year of web video, it’s not completely surprising that a Web 2.0 company is adding video to job search process.
Another service that has previously incorporated video into the job search process is Interview Stream. InterviewStream approached my b-school last year with its software, which helps users prepare for job interviews by using a web cam and its software to ask questions from a list of questions that users select. This can help any potential interview candidate prepare by allowing them to answer and record their answers (through a web cam) to random interview questions, study their non-verbal behavior and of course, analyze their answers to specific questions.
Despite GiggedUp’s thoughtful innovation, there is a potential red flag. Some employers have strict policies regarding pre-screening candidates (with regards to age, race, etc.) and video functionality may pose a potential problem on this front. Employers who prefer to avoid the issue may take a pass on video screening, at least in the short run.
SO WHAT? It’s great to see that the use of video is being included in the job hunt. Not only will employers and job seekers appreciate its role in connecting the two but it will also help candidates better prepare for the interview process. I think that this is another example of how the web continues to innovate and incorporate practical technology such as online video into our day to day lives.

Thanks for the comments Brendan, a fair and accurate analysis of our strengths and challenges. EEO concerns are definitely front and center right now, but the hope is that by crafting a proactive policy and working carefully with candidates we can move beyond those concerns and effectively utilize the service for its intended purpose, both from a candidate and employer perspective.
Thanks again for noting GiggedUp on your site!
Thanks Greg. Sounds as though your team has thoughtfully considered the challenges and opportunities available in the career services market.
Best of luck!
