VC Advice-Good ‘n Plenty

Susan Wu provides some great advice for entrepreneurs preparing for a pitch to Venture Capitalists. While I think the advice is great, I’m more impressed with the larger impact of blogging that her post reflects.

While blogging can be misconstrued as a way for journalism-wannabes to pursue their passion or as a means for people to share their (sometimes too intimate) perspective on the world, a post like Susan’s is an example, which proves just the opposite.

As Chris Anderson discusses in his seminal work The Long Tail, the web is the perfect way for companies to reach out to niche customers. In this case Susan and her company, Charles River Ventures (CRV), are reaching their niche customer, the entrepreneur, by harnessing the web.

Through Susan’s blog, Charles River gets twice the bang for its buck. First, It gives some great advice to prospective clients, which should allow them to make better pitches. Second and more importantly, it shows the reader that CRV cares enough to communicate with them via this medium.

So What? Using the web to reach out to prospective clients is nothing new. However, CRV is wisely using the web to connect with, speak to and build a relationship with potential clients. Clients who will come to realize that CRV not only invests in companies that leverage the web, but also that it actually uses technology itself! How attractive must that make them to prospective clients? And evern more, how valuable a reminder it is to the rest of us, that we should go seek out customers on their ground not just our own
