Should CEOs Blog?

I recently heard a statistic that one new blog is being created every second. Now that’s one of those statistics that seem to be a slight exageration but then again so did the number of videos being uploaded everyday to YouTube (100 million per day!). That being said, how many of those are created by CEOs? Probably not many.
Some including Craig Newmark (founder of Craig’s List) and Jonathan Schwartz (CEO and President of Sun Microsystems) are two examples of the increasing trend towards CEO blogging.
Personally, I think CEOs should blog. A CEO blog, which probably can’t reasonably include the personal riffs and antecdotes of other blogs, provides the company’s leader with a unique way to communicate with his/her employees, investors, customers, partners and the media. Moreover, I think it personalizes the leader.
It provides the aforementioned readers access to the CEOs day to day (or week to week, whatever the case may be) thoughts on a variety of topics. It allows for readers to understand the CEO’s perspectives on issues, challenges and successes.
Clearly, there are things that a CEO cannot or should not discuss (legal procedings and pending earnings announcements are two that come to mind). However, in the grand scheme of things, blogs are a great way for anyone who wants an outlet for thoughts, opinions and observations….CEOs included.
