Links Driving Traffic: The Sequel

In a move reminiscent of John Chow, Matt Coddington is offering a free link back for anyone who provides a review and a link back to his site.

At the time of this post, Matt’s site ranks 21,414 on Alexa, a very respectable traffic rank (much greater than mine in the 600,000+ vicinity). The blog is devoted to making a living online, not unlike the category John Chow is trying to “own” in the organic search results on Google. With over 400 (rough estimate) posts written about his blog with specific linkage, which he specifies, John has risen to #7 in the organic search results.

Matt’s requirements are less stringent and appear easier to achieve the desired results for the blogger–increased traffic through a link back from Matt simply by writing a review of his site.

In general, I like Matt’s site and find my section devoted to “monetizing the blog” in my feed reader growing by the week. It certainly makes sense given my blog’s focus on the “business of the web.”

Nevertheless, I wonder if this topic is a fad that people are jumping on given the large amount of interest by novice blogger. Clearly, the focus of Matt’s blog is about making money online. However, some seem to be jumping on the bandwagon after seeing the results achieved by John, Matt and other bloggers.

Is it right to be so deliberate in building your traffic? Who am I to say? Some traditionalists might argue that results should be earned and not “requested.” However, as we’ve seen blogging is about self expression and personal preferences, which last time I checked included monetizing one’s blog any way one wishes (legally, of course).

So that’s my topic for today…what do you think? Should seeking links deliberately be considered acceptable practice? You be the judge.
