Online Income the Blogger’s Way
In Online Income | 4 comments | permalink
I’ve been noticing a trend among bloggers in which several are willing to share their monthly income with readers. Some might see this as bragging, but I take it for it is-valuable information sharing.
The Long Tail of Online Income
So often we hear about the long tail of journalism, media and blogging. The extension of content production to “citizen journalists.” While this is a trend that’s sure to continue and even grow, there’s another topic worth shining our light on-the online income being made by these bloggers.
Many bloggers are making serious incomes, some even six figure incomes, through their blogs. Imagine the margins on these blogs. They have free or very cheap hosting, limited domain and software costs, one writer, and very little overhead.
Probably their biggest cost is time. The time required to find, develop and write good content is not insignificant. And of course, the time bloggers choose to put into website design, SEO and ad placement adds other barriers to preparing good content.
Nevertheless, bloggers are doing very well as evidenced by a few I’ve profiled below. Check ‘em out…better yet, check out their sites. See what they’re writing about, how they’ve designed their site and who’s advertising with them. Guaranteed there are some great ideas for improving your site and maybe even your online income.
Blog Tycoons
Yaro Starak of Entrepreneur’s Journey writes a post entitled, “How I Make Money Online Part 4 - Blogging.” Yaro pulled down in excess of $6,000 in March largely comes from affiliate income as opposed to the more common blogger source of income-Google Adsense.
Al Carlton of Self Made Minds pulled down over $12,000 through a variety of sources as he shares here.
I think the smartest comment he makes is,
I am concerned that Adsense currently equates to 70% of the sites income (especially after reading one of Scott’s posts), this is a percentage I intend to reduce, hopefully by increasing other sources rather than decreasing the Adsense income.
Having all your eggs in one basket is certainly less than ideal, but it sounds as though Al’s going to work hard to remedy this situation.
Everton Blair of Connected Internet took in a tidy sum of almost $9,000. Thanks to some additional sources of revenue such as Feedburner’s Advertising Network FAN and Intellitxt the in text ad placement network.
Finally, I couldn’t leave out John Chow of John Chow dot com who’s post shows how he made in excess of $8,000 through a variety of sources including the popular Review Me service.
Given his recent relationship with Kontera through which John was able to get the minimum 500,000 page view requirement dropped, John should see a significant bump in April.

My reliance on Adsense is a daily concern for me, particularly as last month I had some really bad days. However, I think this was hopefully down to Adsense experimenting as things seem better this month.
I do believe that seeing how other bloggers are making money has helped me. Reading blogs like problogger is ok, but it’s a bit too generic for me - I want to see real life examples
[…] It really got me thinking. As a newer blogger and one who reads a ton of feeds that discuss increasing traffic and online income, it’s easy to get caught up in traffic numbers, ad impressions served and technorati and alexa rankings. […]
Thanks for the link and mention though I’ve never been called a “blog tycoon” before and to be honest I don’t think I should be either
I don’t know Al, you certainly seem to be doing pretty well for yourself. I don’t think the “tycoon” moniker is far off…
