How Do You Blog?

John over at Finding the Money writes a great post entitled Here’s a Quick Way To Know If You’re An Underpaid Blogger.

Essentially, John suggests that you’re either writing good content and focused on actively promoting your blog (underpaid) or you’re overly focused on site metrics and ad revenue (properly paid).

It really got me thinking. As a newer blogger and one who reads a ton of feeds that discuss increasing traffic and online income, it’s easy to get caught up in traffic numbers, ad impressions served and technorati and alexa rankings.

However, I think John hits in right on the head. I liken it to sports. If you’re a linebacker who comes off the field after every defensive series looking to find out how many tackles you were just credited with, you miss the bigger picture of what’s happening in the game. You neglect to watch what others are doing, talking to your coaches for suggestions and generally being present in the game.

As members of the blogosphere, we have a great opportunity to share information, ideas and experiences. If we’re too hung up on stats we miss the chance to be effective in our writing.

Certainly made me think this Sunday evening. Thanks, John.

    Yo Brendan,

That’s a great compliment, and I’m glad you took it a step further. Instead of endlessly re-checking stats, not only could we be improving our blogs and promoting them better, but we could be doing what it takes to build a truly successful blog - connecting with others, making friends, and joining communities.

Blogging has always been a social activity, but that concept isn’t reaching new bloggers so well.

    Thanks!
