ESPN Does the Draft Justice

I don’t want to spend too much talking about the draft. However, I feel compelled to say that despite the recent widespread adoption of the NFL Network, ESPN still rules the coverage of the NFL Draft.

ESPN

They’ve got excellent reporters, great analysis (say what you want about his hair, no one knows these players like Mel Kiper Jr.) and most pertinent to this blog, a great web site.

Not only does their site provide a ton of in depth coverage, they do a great job of leveraging viewers’ recognition of on air personalities (e.g. John Clayton and Len Pasquarelli) by having them author blogs or articles to supplement their on air persona.

In addition, ESPN earns incremental subscription revenue through their ESPN Insider, which costs $6.95 per month of $39.95 for a full year. I know several guys who sign up for the monthly version just to get all the scoop leading up to the draft (usually right after the Super Bowl ends up until the draft in late April).

I do think the site could do a better job of sharing their video. For example, they have a nice piece summarizing the draft’s exciting first day. A piece I’m sure many sports bloggers would love to add to their site through “embed” technology except ESPN doesn’t allow it.

Regardless, the weekend was great as usual and ESPN did their usual fantastic job of covering it….kudos to them-again.

A little humor to end this year’s draft festivities….
