Ad Supported Airfare?

I was recently traveling on a USAir flight between D.C. and Boston and was surprised to find, when I lowered my tray table, a large ad for Windows mobile. This ad was afixed to the tray table with a strong adhesive so as to stay afixed to the table for many a flight.

As I previously wrote, it’s not unimaginable to consider a day when everyday expenditures (and pricier ones at that) could be fully ad supported. As discussed, progressive airlines such as Ryanair are already considering variations of this.

So What? I’m always on the lookout for clever business ideas, especially as they relate to online initiatives and this was clearly when of the more innovative, yet simple, ideas that I’ve seen in a while. While it’s no digital signage on the back of a bathroom stall as we saw in the Dana Carvey classic, Opportunity Knocks, it certainly goes to show you that the internet is not the only industry in which ad supported models are being seriously considered.
