Sphere ItAs you’ve probably heard by now, Business 2.0 will be closing its doors. While many in the business community dismissed it as an also-ran in the world of business periodicals, I found that it was just beginning to hit its stride during the rise of another 2.0 - Web 2.0.

With writer’s such as Om Malik, a nice network of blogs and a strong focus on all things tech and business, the magazine really hit a sweet spot for me. Working in business development in technology and media, their coverage of industry changes, new companies and developing business models was always much appreciated.
Now, I can’t help but wonder, “Who will fill the void?” BusinessWeek devotes coverage to tech as does Fortune, but tech is only a small subset of what they attempt to cover. And when events such as the Sub-prime mess occur, you won’t see more than an article devoted to this constantly evolving industry.
Some suggest that Fast Company offers an alternative. While I find it innovative and creative, it seems to focus more on a wide swath of topics…kind of a cutting edge BusinessWeek, if you will.
Wired is another option but I find it much too focused on the technical and science behind the scenes across a variety of technologies. It’s focus on the web tends to be limited and when present, does not address the underlying business models.
Don’t get me wrong, I love these magazines for what they provide and continue to find value from them but long for something more in-depth in my area of interest - the web.
So What?
Therefore, I’m left to ponder, is there any one periodical that I can expect to find dedicated coverage to technology and the business behind it? For now, I will continue to get my info from my heavy use of blogs, bits and pieces from the aforementioned magazines and the Wall St. Journal, but I’ll still miss that monthly magazine devoted to all things 2.0.

Kara Swisher of All Things D makes a stop at Facebook to chat with Media Sales VP, Mike Murphy.
Along the way, we see their sampling of free drinks, interestingly named conference rooms and sadly, Kara’s shaky camerawork.
Overall, interesting stuff from the company that keeps buzzing.

Sphere ItSince Facebook opened up, I’ve been receiving many more friend requests than usual. However, as opposed to grad school or personal friends, I’m receiving requests from people I’ve met in a business setting.
These are people who I wouldn’t think twice about connecting to on LinkedIn but I’m not sure that they’re the people with whom I want to share my personal opinions and activities. Even colleagues I work with on a day to day basis come into question…i.e. where do you draw the line between personal and professional relationships?
As more and more of my personal relationships develop from professional interactions, the question seems more relevant. As we spend more and more time at work, it’s a natural place to develop the friendships that my previously been formed in school, activities or church.
Nevertheless, this blurring of the lines that has arisen from personal and professional social networking sites has given me pause and challenged me to think about who I “connect” with and who’s invite I think twice about accepting.
What do you think and how are you handling the challenges presented by the various relationships you maintain?
